XLPE is a short for of cross linked polyethylene. Polyethylene is having a linear molecular structure as shown in below image A. Molecules of this material are not chemically bonded and it is shown in image B. This is why molecules are easily deformed at high temperature.


However, XLPE molecules are bonded in a three dimensional network as shown in image C and D. This is why XLPE molecules have strong resistance to deformation even if the temperature is high.

Manufacturers produce cross linked polyethylene from polyethylene under extreme pressure using organic peroxides as additives. The application of pressure and heat is used to effect the cross linking.

  • Routine tests

These are tests performed for monitoring the overall cable quality and function. Tests included in the routine tests list are high voltage tests, insulation resistance tests, conductor resistance tests, and voltage tests.

  • Type tests

These tests are performed to calibrate and validate cable design type. These tests are bending tests, impulse voltage tests, thermal stability tests, corona level tests, and dielectric thermal resistance tests.

  • Special tests

These tests are conducted to check major changes made to the design of the cables to proper performance thresholds.

  • Post installation tests

Post installation tests are used to determine and ensure that cables installed in optimum operating conditions.
